Dryer Door Hard Drive Magnet Hack

Jake von Slatt — Fri, 01/01/2010 - 12:24

I started with a piece of scrap wood and screwed to it three magnets that I salvaged from a couple of old hard drives.  Each hard drive has two magnets like this inside.

I put a kitchen cabinet handle on the front to make it easier to remove.

The magnets are very strong and easily hold the door shut as the sneakers and clothes tumble inside.  If you are worried about the finish of your dryer add a layer of cloth tape over the face of each magnet to protect it.

Eureka!

I think I will use a variation on this idea for the refrigerator in the basement who's freezer door handle fell off, and whose refrigerator door doesn't always want to stay shut. Brilliant!

A solution to my dryer nightmares!

gloriousobscurity — Mon, 01/04/2010 - 12:10

So here's the thing....

My dryer door fell fully off and the hinge broke and all manner of unspeakable things occurred. Thus I have been using a large piece of MDF and a stool wedged behind a BMX to hold the door on for approximately two years...I am a poor student with no money for a new dryer...plus i have to have one a specific size, due to my miniature laundry room, (It's really just a tiny porch), and they're hard to come by. I do however have two broken PC's and a girlfriend that works in a PC store...Hurrah!

Perhaps in the year 2010 we may the a way to convert dryer steam into some form of power source for a mechanoid to do my washing for me.

Until then I heartily thank you Mr Von Slatt for providing me with a solution to my greatest laundromatic nightmare.

G.O.

Magnets

AndyAtWorkshopshed — Mon, 01/04/2010 - 06:03

Yes, those harddisk magnets are very useful, I've got some in my workshop holding lights and my drill chuck key in place.

They are difficult to shape though as they shatter easily. They are just covered in a thin skin and are like rocks underneath. If you try to hacksaw the magnets they will give off lots of sparks which is a little freaky the first time you do it.
