Dump Finds

Jake von Slatt — Mon, 06/23/2008 - 09:47

This weeks visit to the town's transfer station netted some nice brass bits that I think will find their way onto the car project and another old typewriter.

Nice! What type of typewriter?

Nice! What is the brand name of the typewriter? It looks a bit like the Underwriter Portable I have.

It's a Remington Portable.

No respect for the old stuff.

TheGeek — Tue, 06/24/2008 - 00:31

Why do people keep throwing away old typewriters? Have they never heard of ebay? Even if they don't work their is someone who could use them for parts. Old typewriters are miracles of mechanical engineering. I hate to see any of them in the trash.

What is a transfer station and where can I start picking up typewriters like that?

When your town dump fills up

Jake von Slatt — Mon, 06/23/2008 - 16:39

When your town dump fills up they cap it and you get a Transfer Station in its stead.  There are compactors where you dump your household trash, dumpsters for recyclables and, in our case, a "Swap Shop" where people leave things that might still be desirable like the items I found.  Unfortunately, a lot of the best stuff ends up in the metal recycling dumpster which we are no longer allowed to take things out of. Good stuff to do

coyotebanjo — Mon, 06/23/2008 - 10:29

Jake:

Have been an admirer of your site and creations for around 2 years. Though I'm neither a steampunk proponent nor much of a maker, I am very much in agreement with your expressed philosophy about taking/giving back control of one's and one's community's life via creating rather than consuming things. I've been involved for years in teaching various forms of vernacular music as community service (in addition to my day gig as a college professor) and, like you, I find that teaching people to create things--case-mods, keyboards, buses, cars, music, dances, storytelling, etc--is a way to give them back control of their lives' possibilities.

I'm impressed by the beauty of the things you build and appreciate the sanity with which you frame them. Thank you!

all the best,

Dr Coyote
