New York Times Fashion & Style - Steampunk Influences?
Jake von Slatt — Thu, 11/12/2009 - 12:09
Are your ears burning? They should be because the New York Times is talking about you. David Colman's This just in from the 1890's is a laundry list of Steampunk influence in fashion and style - yet the 's' word is nowhere to be seen!
Not long ago, big brass-buttoned military coats looked a bit extreme. So did high-button, high-lapel vests and slim tweed trousers. And so did guys who tucked said trousers into high, old-fashioned hunting boots. Now these clothes (along with those ever-present beards and mustaches) look like downtown defaults...
I've been seeing more and more examples of creative folks clearly drawing inspiration from Steampunk but shying away from the 's' word. That's sure to upset some people but I truly have no problem with it. I draw inspiration from myriads of things and people around me and it would be impossible to site every single thing that touched or influenced me.
As with home design, where curio cases, taxidermy and other stylish clutter of the Victorian era have been taken up by young hipsters, many of today’s popular men’s styles have their roots in the late 19th century.
A Tale of Two Sundays
Jake von Slatt — Sun, 05/18/2008 - 21:35
The past two Sundays were very different Sundays. A few weeks ago Sharon Steel of the Boston Phoenix came out to The Workshop to interview me. The interview went really well, Sharon was thoughtful and really interested in my particular take on Steampunk and the broader Steampunk community. We spent several hours together and much of the interview was recorded on video. You'll find the article in this week's Boston Phoenix as well as online along with the video here.
Boston Phoenix Video

I completely forgot that The Boston Phoenix shot video when they came out to the workshop to interview me! They've just put it up on their site and I've embedded it here:
If you haven't read the whole piece you should! It contains a LOT more then just me, in fact I'm in less then 20% of the written article.
I am so pleased that my home town really seems to "get" Steampunk!
Steampunk Workshop at Maker Faire !
Meredith Scheff — Sun, 04/20/2008 - 22:13
I am happy to announce that The Steampunk Workshop will be making a grand appearance at this years Maker Faire! For those of you not acquainted with it; "Maker Faire is a two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. It’s for creative, resourceful people of all ages and backgrounds who like to tinker and love to make things." Make magazine, sponsor of the event, has been very kind to SPWS and given us a space to create for you what we have named the Contraptors Lounge. It will be a space for Steampunk Makers, admirers, and the unaffiliated or uninitiated to meet, greet, fraternize, and otherwise hobnob with each other and us as well as see some awesome projects!
Appearing at the lounge will be the inimitable Datamancer (of steampunk laptop fame), The Legion Fantastique, Magpie and Libby Bulloff of Steampunk Magazine, Molly 'Porkshanks' Friedrich - whose work has been featured here on SPWS - as well as a several other travellers and Makers including yours truly, Meredith Scheff, and our esteemed proprietor Jake von Slatt.
Maker Faire is held in San Mateo, Ca, on the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. In addition to our humble encampment, there will be all manner of machinery, crafts, lectures, thing-a-ma-bobs, whatchamajigs, and whosawatsits to peruse at your leisure. In other words, if at all humanly possible, you should drag your bustled bootie out there and have yourself one hell of a good time!
