Workshop Telephone
Jake von Slatt — Mon, 12/29/2008 - 00:35

I started this project quite some time ago, in fact some of you may have seen it at Maker Faire back in May. Originally, this was intended to be an example of 'how to steampunkify an object.' The idea being that by removing the casing and exposing the interesting insides of the phone you can make it more exciting and attractive.
I guess it kind of worked, but to be honest I'm not that pleased with the results. In any case, it will make a fine telephone for the workshop.
. . .
Oh hey! I just came across this video from TechieDiva where Nathaniel Johnstone from Abney Park shows off my phone at Maker Faire - what's so cool is that he gets it just right and this video was likely filmed with in hours of the time when Nathan and I first met in person!
YASPKB! Yet Another Steampunk Keyboard
Jake von Slatt — Tue, 12/23/2008 - 16:22
Here's another Steampunk keyboard, and one of the closest copies of the original I've seen to date! I was alerted to it by the creator of this wonderful example - Peter Sztojanov jr. from the beautiful city of Budapest - who commented on my MySpace page.
There are quite a few more shots in his Flickrstream here!
Since the caption on the leading photo reads "Steampunk Alchemy's 1st keyboard" I am wondering if my good friend Rich Nagy a.k.a. Datamancer hasn't got some new competition from his ancestral homeland!
Small form factor keyboard and monitor

Here's a nice little keyboard and monitor set from Daniel Pon. I particularly like the small form factor, I have a Happy Hacker KB kicking around the shop that I might do something like thing too.

Thanks for the photo and kind words Cliff!
This is one of the more unique casemods I've seen and I'm quite impressed! The large disk at the back contains the motherboard, the cage at right is the memory chamber and contains the hardrive and the copper tube front and left of center is the USB hub.
I can already hear John Brownlee over at BBG lamenting the lack of a brain in a fluid filled jar!
Jules Verne Casemod
Jake von Slatt — Wed, 07/16/2008 - 07:20
Jon dropped me a quick note with a link to pictures of his winning entry in the xLAN case mod competition.
It reminds me of my own water-cooled PC project from a couple years back, only with clockwork and way more awesome!
Thanks Jon!
Victorian All-in-One PC
Jake von Slatt — Tue, 04/22/2008 - 16:56
The inexorable march of technology has rendered my 4:3 aspect ratio 19" LCD mod and my pump-less water cooled PC obsolete, so when I saw a 24" wide screen monitor on sale for $299.00 I grabbed it with the intent on making a Steampunk All-in-One PC.
Dave Veloz's Mac Mini Mod, Monitor, & Keyboard
Jake von Slatt — Sun, 03/02/2008 - 21:38
There is nothing in the world that I like better then receiving pictures of things that people have been inspired to build by my projects. When I opened my mail and discovered these photos of Dave's monitor, keyboard, and Mini Mac wrap I squeed like teen on LJ!
In interviews I've often described Steampunk as the intersection of technology and romance - well here is the story to prove it!
Steampunk Car Project - Dashboard, Wiring, Lights
Jake von Slatt — Thu, 02/28/2008 - 11:44

Work on the Steampunk car continues. Here I remove the rotted seats and mildewed interior. Rebuild and rewire the dash as well as replace the VW tail lights with reproduction Model A lamps.

Anonymous — Fri, 02/22/2008 - 11:52

Guest artist Molly porkshanks Friedrich shows us how to update a pair of vintage headphones for use with an iPod or MP3 player.
[Editor's Note: Welcome to our first Guest Artist project, a new feature that I hope will become a standard here at The Steampunk Workshop. If you'd be interested in doing a guest spot with us pitch me your idea! Please write me at jake@vonslatt.com. - Jake ]
Steampunk Car Project - Initial Survey
Jake von Slatt — Wed, 01/09/2008 - 09:48

Late in 2007 I spotted this car on eBay with a "Buy it Now" price of $1500 and, well, bought it then. Its a 1929 Mercedes Gazelle SSK replica made by Classic Motor Carriages. CMC made these cars in the late '70s and early '80s. In fact,
I remember seeing advertisements for the kits in the back of Popular Science magazine when I was younger and thinking they looked pretty cool. I later came to realize their intrinsic cheesiness; but that makes them all the more hackable as I won't be getting email from all over hell-and-gone telling me I've ruined a collectible car!
