Etching Tins with Salt Water and Electricity - Compliment to The Steampunk Bible Article

etched altoids tins The Steampunk Bible contains an article I wrote on etching small candy tins with salt water and electricity. There was limited space in the book so we've provided this expanded compliment article to help you should you be interested in trying this project, enjoy!

Laurence writes:

Dear Sir:

I have added some pictures to my flickr photoset of my new etching designs.

Your site was the inspiration for this madness. Each design has to be hunted for, modified, printed, modified again, etched, modified again, and then a batch of 'production quality' are all etched. And then off to the next design.

Thanks again for the inspiration.

I think these are just fabulous! There are a couple more after the cut but be sure to click through to Laurence's Flicker and check out the copper plated Fulton's Nautilus tin!

Copper Plating and Etching Altoids Tins

With this project I wanted to try a number of new things:

  • Magazine pages as cheap toner transfer media
  • Copper electroplating
  • Etching Altoid tins with a salt water solution

The copper plating met with mixed success, but the other two methods resulted in some nice pieces.
