Steampunk comes to the Pier Show

Bruce and Melanie Rosenbaum are taking some of their Steampunked Home on the road, specifically to The Pier Antique show in New York. See the press release below.  -Jake

NOV. 13 & 14, 2010

Think Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.  Think Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll.  Mix mad-scientist speculation with Victorian sensibility and throw in a bit of Sci-Fi.  What do you have?  Steampunk – one of the most fascinating design and lifestyle trends today.  At the upcoming Pier Show, Nov. 13 & 14 on Pier 94, Steampunk will take center stage when ten of its most avid admirers and practitioners present the Steampunk House - – a fantastic, futuristic exhibit devoted to Steampunk creations and design ideas for the home.

Apparently, It Is On!

Our favorite Professor is calling out Mr. B The Gentleman Rhymer in true Chap Hop fashion! It. Is. On! I was most fortunate to met the Professor in person at the Steampunk World's Fair last year and it seems that we will both be in attendance again this May. Huzzah!

Steampunk Fortnight on Tor.com

My apologies for being a bit late with this for Steampunk Fortnight at Tor Books has already begun!

Last year at around this time, Tor.com was deep in the throes of Steampunk Month, our first attempt to focus on a specific topic for a short period of time and see what we could say about it. A year later, steampunk is still hunting for the tiniest glimmers of recognition within mainstream culture. Whereas, in our corner of the world, you can’t take more than a few steps without encountering a glittering new dirigible or an old standby whose brass accents are being buffed to a high sheen. Everyone has an opinion about steampunk these days.*

Be sure not to not miss SPWS friend Ay-leen The Peacemaker's essay and the sneak peek at Jeff VanderMeer's up coming Steampunk Bible!

Get the Whirlygig to the Museum

[Another Kickstarter project I'm backing: my friend Tom Sepe is trying to get his Whirlygig Emoto to the CRMI]

How do ya get a steam-electric hybrid motorcycle across country? With your help! (and a very strong box!)

The Charles River Museum of Art and Innovation's new exhibit: "Steampunk, Form and Function" is hosting a design competition and my bike, the Whirlygig Emoto, needs help getting there!

She'll need a custom crate and rush shipping in order to make it to Massachusettes by October 22nd, the opening of the exhibit! The money will help pay for the crate and the shipping to and from the Museum . . .

Charles River Museum of Industry--Steampunk: Form and Function

[The following is a press release for an event at the Charles River Museum of Industry in Waltham, Massachusetts - Jake]

An Exhibition of Innovation, Invention and Gadgetry

At The Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation’s new exhibit Steampunk: Form & Function – An Exhibition of Innovation, Invention and Gadgetry, sponsored by Steampuffin (www.steampuffin.com), modern technology meets the Victorian era.

Inspired by the works of authors like Jules Verne and H.G Wells, and grown out of the world of science fiction, Steampunk has become a cultural phenomenon like that of the punk rock movement of the 1980’s or the goth movement of the 1990’s.

. . .

Here we go . . . Castle's Steampunk Episode

A kind and competent portrayal, but I can't help thinking that we could use a nice juicy scandal or two! ;-)

Steampunk Around the World - Holland

The Cog is Dead

The Cog is Dead is a time traveling band with a bit of a musical identity crisis. Formed in Grimsby, England in 1893, the Cog is Dead have traveled to various points of time in an effort to save clockwork mechanics and steam power! Along the way they have discovered several types of marvelous music which has helped to inspire their own.

Think The Squirrel Nut Zippers meet Abney Park. This is some damn fine Steampunk music! I particularly like "The Copper War" and the title track "The Cog is Dead" is sure to become a Steampunk classic!

Click through to their site or listen on MySpace!

Thanks Geof!

Steampunk Form & Function Design Competition

The folks behind this Steampunk Home and the Organ Computer desk we covered earlier are organizing a Steampunk design competition along with several other Steampunk notables.

Bruce writes:

Sponsored by, Charles River Museum of Industry & InnovationModVic, LLCSteampuffin and Brute Force Studios,  Steampuffin’s 1st Annual Steampunk Form & Function Design Competition brings together outstanding Steampunk design innovations, details the design process and promotes the role of the Steampunk designer/craftsman. Along with recycled items, all Steampunk design solutions are primarily built using authentic Victorian (1850s to early 1900s) objects, salvage items, clothing and antiques that incorporate modern technology and have specific functions for modern day, practical uses.

The Future of SteamPunk Fashion -- SteamPunk Magazine #7

Our own Libby Bulloff has a wonderful article in the current issue of SteamPunk Magazine. Libby makes the case for what needs to happen for Steampunk to become a sustainable style rather than mere and fleeting fashion.

Within, she examines current trends in Steampunk dress and warns that:

We’re no better than our wealthy, trendy, hipster counterparts when we cease the continuous metamorphosis of our look, when we won’t fearlessly model our style at our desk jobs . . .

I think she hits the nail on the head.

SteamPunk Magazine is available in print through Strangers in a Tangled Wilderness in the Americas and Vagrants Among Ruins for the rest of the world, and can also be downloaded for free from their downloads page.  Available for the first time is an iPhone/eReader version for 1£. This is the version I bought and I love having it on my phone.

Also featured in this issue are pieces by Jaymee Goh of Silver Goggles and Ay-leen The Peacemaker of Beyond Victoriana who did me the great honor of inviting me to sit on their Social Issues in Steampunk Roundtable panel at the upcoming Steampunk World's Fair!

New England Steampunk Festival at the Charles River Museum of Industry

From the flyer:

Jules Verne meets modern technology during a daylong festival at the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation in Waltham. Enjoy hands on activities, interactive exhibits, vendors, live music and more at this event celebrating everything steampunk!
This looks like a lot of fun! Click on the flyer or download the PDF for more information!
The Charles River Museum of Industry is really a wonderful place and I've been there myself many times. Alas, they are closed to the public at the moment while they conserve and repair exhibits which were damaged in the recent flooding of the Charles River.

The Steampunk Festival itself was originally scheduled in April but was moved back to May 1st in response to the flooding situation. Please show up and support this wonderful resource for Steampunks in the region!

Steam Trunk Industries Ratrod!

Steampunk RatRodIt is a truism that the people out there doing the most interesting things and having the most fun often don't have the time or inclination to post what they're up to on the internet.

Fortunately for us, they often have friends that recognize how impossibly cool the things that they're doing are and egg them on!

That's the case with Tien and Guiness' incredible Steampunk Ratrod! Click through for more info, pics and a vid of the this monster's awakening!
